Masters Cup Result

Stafford 0 – 9 Barford Tigers

As expected it was a tough opening game for the Stafford Vets team against an outstanding Barford Tigers team which included many players who have played at the very top level.

The Tigers fluent pass and move game plan paid dividends putting Stafford under pressure from the off.

The Stafford defence did a very credible job keeping the score reasonably respectable with the midfield and attack providing limited respite despite winning a few short corners.

Thanks goes out to the club members who turned out to provide a rousing support throughout.

Stafford Vets now play in the Men’s Masters Plate with the next game not until the 3rd February 2013 as yet again we gained a bye for the first round. Full details here

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 24th. November 2012 Re : Barlaston Fathoms v Stafford Fathoms

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 24th. November 2012 ( Re : 3:45pm push back ( s/b 3:30 pm push back ) at Alleynes Sport Centre, Stone.

Attached above are 2 action photos taken before half time of the fathom game yesterday against Barlaston Fathoms.

Barlaston Fathoms 2 v Stafford Fathoms 2 ( H/T : 1-0 )
( Scorers : Daniel Rennie & Andrew Whitehouse )
Stafford Fathom Team : Pog ( GK ), Peter Powers, Andrew Whitehouse, Ben Waller, Matthew Till, Sam Gibson, Taran Bassie, Harry Coltman, Jack Hodkinson, Ian Hodkinson, Chris Pendleton, Gareth Minton, Daniel Rennie & Me ( John Sinclair ) ( Captain ).

The Fathom Team arrived at Alleynes Sport Centre, Stone in torrensial pouring rain and to find the pitch they were playing on, exposed to the nasty cold wind that was blowing a gale across it.
Everyone in the fathoms was very much up for the game despite the appalling / atrocious weather conditions and everyone was really wanting to try and improve on last weeks performance / outing against Aldridge & Walsall Fathoms. The team was also bolstered by the trio of Pog ( in goals ) Gareth Minton & Daniel Rennie from the 2nd Team. Like last week, the first 20 minutes of the game saw Barlaston pressing hard to open the Stafford defence up, which was holding up well under the pressure and when Barlaston did manage to get past Stafford Fathoms resolute defence, they unfortunately found Pog in no mood for Stafford’s defence to be breached, as he was stopping everything they hit at him and the forward line of Ben Waller, Andrew Whitehouse & Jack Hodkinson ( who at this stage of the game, was having a really good game ) were also on numerous occasions testing out the opposition’s defence ( Re : some daring runs ). Unfortunately, about half way through the first half, Stafford Fathoms were unable to prevent Barlaston taking the lead and at half time Stafford Fathoms found themselves trailing by this single goal.
The second half, saw Stafford Fathoms determined not to to let the opposition get the better of them, but to push hard for an equaliser and this determination on wanting to get on level terms with their opponents, Barlaston soon paid off, when Daniel Rennie put the ball into the back of the Barlaston goal in order to level the scores at one a piece. Stafford’s defence of Peter Powers, Harry Coltman ( who last week, was having an excellant game and like last week recived the fathoms captain nomination of man of the match ), Jack Hodkinson’s Dad, Ian ( who was playing his first game for the fathoms ) & John Sinclair, then found themselves under quiet a bit of pressure from Barlaston forwards and they did there best not to crumble under this renewed pressure, but unfortunately they were unable to prevent Barlaston re-taking the lead. However, Stafford kept their heads up, despite going 2-1 down and with the game drawing to a close, they mustered up a number of attacks on their opponents, which resulted in Andrew Whitehouse bagging his first goal for the fathoms and making the score line level again at 2-2 and when the final whistle blew a few minutes later, Stafford Fathoms found that their hard work and endeavour had meant they had drawn the game two all with Barlaston Fathoms.

I hope yesterday’s fathom game / result will give all Stafford fathom players confidence and belief they can yet again build on what they have achieved so far, irrespective of previous games scorelines.

Next week ( Saturday 1st. December 2012 ) see the fathoms back at home, as they are down to play Bloxwich Fathoms ( Re : a 10.00 am push back at Beaconside & Players / Team picked to play for the fathom team need to meet at Beaconside at 9.30 am ) the fathoms are yet again looking for a goalkeeper to play for them between the posts for this fathom game on Saturday ( 1st. December 2012 ). ( so if there is anyone who fancies going between the posts for the fathoms this Saturday or in any future games, then please let me know as soon as possible by text on 07966398190 ). Otherwise, the fathom team that played yesterday with the exception of goal scorer Andrew Whitehouse ( due to work commitments ) & Gareth Minton & Daniel Rennie who doubled up from the 2nd. Team, this will more than likely be the fathom team to face Bloxwich Fathoms this Saturday ( 1st. December 2012 ). However, it will also include the return of Tom Cope, Adam Robinson & Tristan Pomfret and after this particular game ( i.e. mid-day ) teas will be available at our Hockey Club for the opposition players of Bloxwich fathoms + our fathom players, so please feel free to come down to club to enjoy chit chat with the opposition & the free food / tea ( paid for by your match fees ).

1st team Match Report v Solihull Blossomfield

Stafford HC 1st team lost 2-1 away last weekend to Solihull Blossomfield, in somewhat controversial circumstances.  Stafford totally dominated the game to the extent that the opposition actually apoligised for the win!  However Stafford were still guilty of conceding sloppy goals and not being able to convert their pressure into goals.

Stafford started brightly in appalling playing conditions, Ben Hollands riding a couple of tough challenges to win a penalty corner, the ball was slipped right to Dan Howe, whose shot was unable to find the mark.  Unfortunately Stafford then conceded a penalty corner themselves after Simon Parnell was turned insideout by his opponent and was forced to concede the corner.  Solihull then executed a slick routine the scorer slipping behind the Stafford defence to deflect the ball in. After that Stafford went on all out attack, they were totally dominate in midfield with James Gillingham and John Peatfield controlling the game, however the final pass was lacking or Stafford were unable to get a meaningful shot off.  It was 1-0 to the Birmingham side at half-time.

After the break it was more of the same from Stafford, they eventually scored from their 6th penalty corner the slip to Ben Hollands saw his touch dribble over the line.  Stafford were visibly lifted by this and Andy Peatfield was upended in the circle to see a penalty awarded, unfortunately his resultant flick was well saved by the keeper, this was Peatfield’s first miss in 16 attempts. Stafford still had the momentum until the umpire had to halt the game to deal with a Solihull spectator, after the game was eventually re-started, the opposition took advantage and played the ball into the circle, their centre forward seemed to have had his shot well saved by Brad Evans in goal, but the umpire penalised an earlier offence instead of recognising the advantage, by awarding a penalty corner.  Solihull then slipped the ball again to the left and a scrappy shot seemed to have been saved on the line by Simon Parnell but the umpire ruled that the ball had crossed the line. Stafford kept pressing but were unable to force an equaliser, so despite a good performance they went away pointless.

Next week they face Old Wulfrians at home, 1.00pm start at Beaconside.

3rd XI vs West Bromwich

West Bromwich 3-Stafford-4.

A fantastic result to end the first half of the campaign. Stafford came back twice in the game to win a really tight contest. The hockey played by both sides was excellent despite the very wet conditions. West Brom went ahead and Stafford pulled level quickly with a John Sudale defelcted strike from a short, before the break Stafford went ahead with a Peter Chiu glance from another short. In the second half West Brom equalised and then pulled ahead to 3-2. Instead of accepting defeat Stafford pressed ahead withe goals from Dave parr and Peter Chiu securing victory. A great team effort, best of season to date.

1st Team Match Report v Leamington

StaffordHC 1sts (2) v Leamington Spa HC 1sts (1)

Stafford Hockey Club 1st team secured another valuable 3 points last weekend, beating Leamington Spa 2-1. Stafford were able to build on their positive result the week before against Whitchurch, with easily their best performance of the season. Leamington were a very good team, showing the high standard of hockey being played in West Midlands Division 1.

The early stages were quite even, most of the game being played in the midfield, James Gillingham and Ben Hollands breaking down all the oppositions play.  Stafford themselves were unable to put any meaningful chances together, until a good move between the Peatfield brothers, saw John just miss from a far post reverse stick shot. Leamingtonthen took the lead when their forward expertly controlled a bouncing ball and slotting it neatly past the advancing Brad Evans in goal.

Stafford were still well and truly in the game and able to win a number of penalty corners, unfortunately Stafford’s routine was not as slick as normal and score remained 1-0 to Leamington.  It took a piece of creativity from Adam Kyle before Stafford equalised, Kyle laid the ball beautifully into the path of Dan Howe, Howe slapper the ball powerfully past theLeamingtonkeeper.  The score remained 1-1 at half time.

After the breakStaffordwere really able to take control of the game, putting consistent pressure on their opponent’s goal.  Andy Peatfield placed a shot on a defenders foot in front of goal, but unfortunately the umpire did not see the infringement andLeamingtoncleared the ball. Staffordtook the lead from a penalty corner, Adam Kyle’s drag flick going straight through the keeper’s legs.  Stafford then had to endure a frenetic finish, great tackling from Giles Rowden seeing him receive the man on the match award and some key saves from 15 year old Brad Evans in goal, butStaffordheld firm for a deserved 3 points.

Next week Stafford are away to Solihull Blossomfield,Staffordwill be hoping again to build on their improving form.

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 17th. November 2012 Re : Aldridge & Walsall Fathoms v Stafford Fathoms

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 17th. November 2012 ( Re : 3pm push back at Wolverhampton University – Walsall Campus )

Aldridge & Walsall Fathoms 3 v Stafford Fathoms 0 ( H/T : 3-0 )
( Scorers : None )

Stafford Fathom Team : Jay Mullor ( GK ), Chris Pendleton, Andrew Whitehouse, Ben Waller, Adam Robinson, Matthew Till, Sam Gibson, Taran Bassie, Tom Cope, Harry Coltman, Amjid Mahmood, Ashley Dunn & Me ( John Sinclair ) ( Captain ).

Car Drivers : Andrew Whitehouse, Lynda Gibson ( Sam Gibson’s Mum ), Tom Cope’s Dad & Ashley Dunn.

The Fathom Team arrived nice and early for the Aldridge & Walsall game ( Re : 3pm push back at Wolverhampton University – Walsall Campus ), this early arrival meant it gave them plenty of chance to sort the team out Re : where everyone was going to play and to hype themselves up to trying to improve on last weeks performance / outing against Old Wulfs at Wolverhampton. The team was also bolstered by the Stafford 4th.Team game being cancelled on Saturday morning and that meant they were able to recruit 2 extra players in the form of Jay Mullor and Ashley Dunn. Jay Mullor who until recently was playing in goals for Stafford 1st. & 2nd. Teams was a last minute replacement in goals for the fathoms, as Amjid Mahmood had originally volunteered to go between the posts for the Fathoms for this game, but when Jay became available, Amjid after discussions with the Fathoms Captain agreed to play outfield in order to allow Jay to play in goals for the fathoms. The first 20 minutes of the game saw Aldridge / Walsall pressing hard to open the Stafford defence up, which was holding up well under the pressure and when Aldridge / Walsall did manage to get past Stafford Fathoms resolute defence, they unfortunately found Jay Mullor in sparkling form and showing his years of experience in goals and he was stopping everything they hit at him. An injury half way through the first half to Matthew Till ( who was hit on the knee by an oppostion stick ) had to leave the field of play for treatment and unfortunately he was unable to come back on for the rest of the game, this meant Stafford Fathoms themselves having to re-organise itself Re : his valuable loss in midfield. Not long after Matthew went off with his injury, Stafford Fathoms found themselves going one nil down Re : Aldridge & Walsall scoring from a short corner, which Stafford Fathom’s captain John Sinclair was unlucky not to block / deflect on the line and Aldridge / Walsall then capitalised on taking this lead and by half time they had managed to penetrate Stafford Defence / Keeper on two more occasions, so at half time Stafford Fathoms found themselves trailing by 3 goals to nil.

The second half, saw Stafford Fathoms determined not to to let the opposition get the better of them ( i.e. as what happened in last week’s game against Old Wulfs Fathoms ) and Staffords defence and goalie did not crumble but stood up to what Aldridge / Walsall threw at them and Stafford Fathoms youngsters of Tom Cope, Taran Bassie & especially Harry Coltman ( who was nominated as man of the match by Staffords Fathom Captain ) all got better as the game progressed and this helped the whole team to have a very good second half performance, which nearly lead at the end of the game to Sam Gibson scoring a consolation goal and when the final whistle blew, Stafford Fathoms found that their hard work and endeavour had prevented Aldridge & Walsall adding to their 3 goals they scored in the first half and therefore had also improved on last weeks scoreline of losing 7-1 and again like last week, Stafford Fathoms received praise again from yesterdays opposition, Aldridge & Walsall on how they played and the spirit they played the game in.

I hope yesterday’s fathom game will give all Stafford fathom players confidence and belief that they can build on what they have achieved so far, irrespective of each games scorelines.

Next week ( Saturday 24th. November 2012 ) see the fathoms on the road again, as they are down to play Barlaston Fathoms ( Re : a 3.30pm push back at Alleynes School Sports Centre, Oulton Road, Stone Staffs ST15 8DR ) and with Jay Mullor being picked / chosen to play in goals for 4ths or higher and Amjid Mahmood not being available for this fathom game, the fathoms are again unfortunately looking for a goalkeeper to play for them between the posts for this fathom game on Saturday ( 24th. November 2012 ). Otherwise with the exception of Ashley Dunn more than likely being picked again for Stafford 4ths, the fathom team that played yesterday plus the return of Peter Powers & Jack Hodkinson this will more than likely be the fathom team to face Barlaston Fathoms this Saturday 24th. November 2012. However, those fathom players who didn’t play for fathoms yesterday, the Stafford fathom captain ( if you have not already told him so ) needs to know your availability for this game ( i.e. Ben Gledhill, Tristan Pomfret ) and whether after this particular game if you and all other fathom players are up for going for teas / something to drink Re : the Pheasant Pub, nearby in Old Road.
