Notice for Junior Hockey Section

To all players and parents/guardians of the junior section.

May I begin with an apology for the last minute cancellation of hockey training this evening, and for any inconveniences and wasted journeys caused.

We have a passion for hockey and really enjoy coaching the players in the junior section. We have made a commitment to coach, educate and provide the opportunity for  physical activity to young people, and where possible we will always look to fulfill training sessions.

We did perform a pitch inspection at 6.00pm this evening, at which point the “all weather” surface was fine.

However, between 6.00-7.00pm we have limited opportunity to check and therefore make a decision to cancel the session due to there being other activities on the pitch at this time. By 7.00pm the temperature had dropped significantly, and the pitch had become unsafe. In hindsight we really ought to have predicted this, but as the old saying goes – it is a wonderful thing!

I am sure you will all understand that this evening our main commitment: the safety of the players/your children in all training sessions, came first.

With tonight in mind, can I ask please ask/remind all parents/guardians to check with the coaches, if the session will be definitely going ahead each week – particularly when we return in the new year as the winter weather will still be with us.

May i finish by reiterating my comments, on behalf of myself and Dan, that it has be a pleasure and thoroughly enjoyable to have coached all the players so far this season and we look forward to welcoming you all back on Tuesday 8th January 2013, 7.00-8.00pm @ Beaconside for our first training session of the new year.

All that remains to be said is, to one and all, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Steve Morton
Junior Section Coach

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 8th. December 2012 Re : Bridgnorth Fathoms v Stafford Fathoms

Stafford Fathom Match Report for Saturday 8th. December 2012 ( Re : 2:00pm push back on Grass Pitch outside Bridgnorth Hockey Club, Victoria Road, Bridgnorth WV16 4LB ).

Bridgnorth Fathoms 7 v 1 Stafford Fathoms 2 ( H/T : 2-0 )
( Scorers : Own Goal Re : Mike Wymer )

Stafford Fathom Team ( 7 Players + 2 Bridgnorth Players ) : Bridgnorth Player ( GK ), Ben Waller, Matthew Till, Taran Bassie, Harry Coltman, Tom Cope, Mike Wymer, Bridgnorth Player & Me ( John Sinclair ) ( Captain ).

Car Drivers to Fathom Game at Bridgnorth : Tom Cope’s Dad & Harry Coltman’s Dad.

Stafford Fathoms set off from Stafford to play Bridgnorth this Saturday, with only 7 players and no keeper & the eighth player for the fathoms, Peter Powers unfortunately had to cry off half an hour before leaving Stafford, due to being under the weather with the flu ( get well soon Pete, and hope to see you back this Saturday for the fathoms ( Re : ‘the text santa hat’ game away to Cannock Fathoms ). The opposition, Bridgnorth were informed in advance of the fact that Stafford Fathoms were unfortunately coming to them for this Fathom game with no keeper & only 7 players and they kindly said they would provide Stafford Fathoms with a keeper & an extra player and that they would only play with 9 players instead of the normal 11 players, so as to balance the sides.

Stafford Fathom’s depleted team was however, bolstered by having Mike Wymer, playing for them when he normally plays for the first team Re : him unfortunately carrying a bit of an injury at the moment, which he felt would prevent him playing well for the 1st. Team, so their loss was Stafford Fathom’s gain. The game was played outside Bridgnorth’s Hockey Club on their grass pitch, in warm sunshine and the first half saw both teams of 9 players, playing well, especially the youngsters of Stafford Fathoms i.e. Tom Cope, Harry Coltman, Taran Bassie & Matthew Till, who were having their first experience of playing on grass. However, Bridgnorth experience of playing on grass Re : their home games, soon paid dividends, as they broke the deadlock by taking the lead and by half time they had managed to penetrate Stafford’s fathom defence of Taran Bassie ( who went on to win the Stafford Fathom Captain’s Man of the Match award for this game ) Harry Coltman & John Sinclair and the stand-in keeper ( provided by Bridgnorth ), in order to add another goal to their tally, so at half time Bridgnorth were winning 2-0.

The start of the second half saw Matthew Till dropping into defence and Harry Coltman pushing up front and this seemed to aid Stafford Fathom’s taking the start of the second half to Bridgnorth and Mike Wymer who was having an outstanding game for Stafford Fathoms, managed to get into Bridgnorth’s D and saw his shot on goal deflected into the Bridgnorth net, by one of their defenders i.e. an own goal created by him, and that made the scoreline at that stage 2-1 to Bridgnorth and even though Stafford Fathoms did manage to put the ball in the back of Bridgnorth’s net later on in the game Re : shot on goal by Ben Waller, unfortunately it was discounted by one of the 2 Bridgnorth Umpires, due to them blowing for an infringement / foul to Stafford, just before Ben Waller’s shot on goal and Harry Coltman was also unlucky not to get onto the score sheet, as he had a couple of good chances to score for Stafford Fathoms. However, Bridgnorth soon got back into the game and as the second half progressed they soon found their scoring touch by hitting the back of Stafford Fathom’s net on 5 more occassions and unfortunately Stafford’s captain John Sinclair, had to come off with 5 minutes remaining of the game, due to his back playing up and Brignorth’s captain swapped sides in order to re-balance the sides Re : John Sinclair going off injured. Despite Stafford Fathoms 7 players working really hard for one another throughout the game, unfortunately when the final whistle blew, they found that they had gone down 7-1 to Bridgnorth Fathoms, but those 7 players who did play in this game against Bridgnorth Fathoms, should be really proud of themselves, in that they ensured that this game was played and more importantly, it meant that Stafford Fathoms have now not missed playing on every Saturday, since the start of the season ( i.e. Saturday 22nd. September 2012 ).

Next week ( Saturday 15th. December 2012 ) see Stafford Fathoms being the only team in the club playing on this date and they are on the road again Re : playing down the road, Away to Cannock Fathoms ( weather permitting ), in the game which has been labelled by the fathom captain as the ‘Text Santa Hat’ Game ( Re : all Stafford Fathom Players having to wear a Text Santa Hat ( which can be purchased from Asda ) throughout this game, or being fined a £1 if not wearing one of these hats ( fine being donated to charity ) ( This game pushes back at 1.00pm at Cannock Hockey Club ( Chase Park, Church Lane, Hatherton, Cannock WS11 1RR) Re : Pitch 2 ( the nearest astro pitch to the clubhouse ) – Team / Players to meet at Stafford Hockey Club at 12.00pm ( mid-day ) for journey to Cannock Hockey Club – 3 Drivers required for this game, so if you can drive fathom players to this game, I would appreciate if you could let me know, by texting me on 07966398190.

Then after this game there will be 2 weeks off Re : Christmas / New Year and the next Stafford Fathom game in the new year ( i.e. Saturday 5th. January 2013 ) is against Ludlow Fathoms, which is now a home game at Beaconside Re : 10am push back.

1st team Match Report v Kidderminster

Stafford HC 1st team, ended the first half of the season with a slightly disappointing 2-2 draw away at Kidderminster HC.

Stafford started in the best possible fashion with a great early goal from James Gillingham, the ball was played out wide to John Peatfield who’s cross was played beautifully into the path of Gillingham his first touch of the game was to deflect it through the goal keepers legs to take the lead.  Unfortunately for Stafford they could not go on a take control of the game.

Kidderminster gradually brought themselves into the game and were able to equalise after a defensive mix up saw the Kidderminster forward have a free shot, Brad Evans pulled off a great save but Stafford could not clear the rebound and the ball was forced home.  Kidderminster then took the lead with another sloppy goal, the ball deflected behind the Stafford defence and a Kidderminster player was not picked up and was able to slot the ball home.  Stafford did win a couple of penalty corners but were unable to make them count and trailed at the break.

After half time, Stafford upped the tempo but Kidderminster just put 11 players behind the ball, Stafford were struggling to break down the barriers until Dan Howe pounced on a loose ball to level the game.  After that, Stafford had all the pressure, they came closest to scoring when John Peatfied, pushed the ball onto the post.  Stafford though felt they had dropped two points on the final whistle.

Stafford are in mid table, but will be hoping to improve their consistency in the second half of the season.

1st Team Match Report v Old Wulfs

Stafford Hockey Club’s first team drew 2-2 last weekend against Old Wulfrunians HC.  In a game that Stafford should have won, it was the opposition who were cheering on the final whistle, knowing they had salvaged a point.

Stafford were the brighter team in the early stages, the free running of brothers Andy and John Peatfield up front gave the visitors a headache.  Stafford were struggling to penetrate the circle until a poor tackle on Andy Peatfield saw a penalty corner awarded, the slip left to the same player was put over the bar.  Stafford eventually made the pressure count when Adam Kyle pounced on a loose ball to fire it in on his reverse stick side.  Stafford then won a number of other corners but were unable to increase the lead.

At the break Stafford were in positive mood, but were aware that they needed to make the pressure count.  Unfortunately, they conceded a soft penalty corner and Brad Evans in goal was unable to stop the drag flick.  Stafford though were determined to get a goal back, it came in a moment of good fortunate, as a ball seemingly going wide, hit the post and bounced back into the path of John Peatfield who ran the ball into the unguarded goal. Stafford continued to press, and should have scored again in the best move of the game.  An aerial ball out of defence from Giles Rowden saw Mike Wymer in space, he took the ball on and passed it to John Peatfield, a neat one two saw Wymer ghost past the keeper but somehow he missed an open goal.  Then on the final whistle Old Wulfs were awarded a penalty corner, the direct shot was saved well by Simon Parnell, but hit the stick of an opposition player and somehow looped into the goal, Stafford were as the phrase goes ‘sick as a parrot’.

Next week Stafford are away to Kidderminster HC, a team struggling in the bottom reaches of the league.
