Stafford Fathoms set off from Stafford to play Bridgnorth this Saturday, with only 7 players and no keeper & the eighth player for the fathoms, Peter Powers unfortunately had to cry off half an hour before leaving Stafford, due to being under the weather with the flu ( get well soon Pete, and hope to see you back this Saturday for the fathoms ( Re : ‘the text santa hat’ game away to Cannock Fathoms ). The opposition, Bridgnorth were informed in advance of the fact that Stafford Fathoms were unfortunately coming to them for this Fathom game with no keeper & only 7 players and they kindly said they would provide Stafford Fathoms with a keeper & an extra player and that they would only play with 9 players instead of the normal 11 players, so as to balance the sides.

Stafford Fathom’s depleted team was however, bolstered by having Mike Wymer, playing for them when he normally plays for the first team Re : him unfortunately carrying a bit of an injury at the moment, which he felt would prevent him playing well for the 1st. Team, so their loss was Stafford Fathom’s gain. The game was played outside Bridgnorth’s Hockey Club on their grass pitch, in warm sunshine and the first half saw both teams of 9 players, playing well, especially the youngsters of Stafford Fathoms i.e. Tom Cope, Harry Coltman, Taran Bassie & Matthew Till, who were having their first experience of playing on grass. However, Bridgnorth experience of playing on grass Re : their home games, soon paid dividends, as they broke the deadlock by taking the lead and by half time they had managed to penetrate Stafford’s fathom defence of Taran Bassie ( who went on to win the Stafford Fathom Captain’s Man of the Match award for this game ) Harry Coltman & John Sinclair and the stand-in keeper ( provided by Bridgnorth ), in order to add another goal to their tally, so at half time Bridgnorth were winning 2-0.

The start of the second half saw Matthew Till dropping into defence and Harry Coltman pushing up front and this seemed to aid Stafford Fathom’s taking the start of the second half to Bridgnorth and Mike Wymer who was having an outstanding game for Stafford Fathoms, managed to get into Bridgnorth’s D and saw his shot on goal deflected into the Bridgnorth net, by one of their defenders i.e. an own goal created by him, and that made the scoreline at that stage 2-1 to Bridgnorth and even though Stafford Fathoms did manage to put the ball in the back of Bridgnorth’s net later on in the game Re : shot on goal by Ben Waller, unfortunately it was discounted by one of the 2 Bridgnorth Umpires, due to them blowing for an infringement / foul to Stafford, just before Ben Waller’s shot on goal and Harry Coltman was also unlucky not to get onto the score sheet, as he had a couple of good chances to score for Stafford Fathoms. However, Bridgnorth soon got back into the game and as the second half progressed they soon found their scoring touch by hitting the back of Stafford Fathom’s net on 5 more occassions and unfortunately Stafford’s captain John Sinclair, had to come off with 5 minutes remaining of the game, due to his back playing up and Brignorth’s captain swapped sides in order to re-balance the sides Re : John Sinclair going off injured. Despite Stafford Fathoms 7 players working really hard for one another throughout the game, unfortunately when the final whistle blew, they found that they had gone down 7-1 to Bridgnorth Fathoms, but those 7 players who did play in this game against Bridgnorth Fathoms, should be really proud of themselves, in that they ensured that this game was played and more importantly, it meant that Stafford Fathoms have now not missed playing on every Saturday, since the start of the season ( i.e. Saturday 22nd. September 2012 ).

Next week ( Saturday 15th. December 2012 ) see Stafford Fathoms being the only team in the club playing on this date and they are on the road again Re : playing down the road, Away to Cannock Fathoms ( weather permitting ), in the game which has been labelled by the fathom captain as the ‘Text Santa Hat’ Game ( Re : all Stafford Fathom Players having to wear a Text Santa Hat ( which can be purchased from Asda ) throughout this game, or being fined a £1 if not wearing one of these hats ( fine being donated to charity ) ( This game pushes back at 1.00pm at Cannock Hockey Club ( Chase Park, Church Lane, Hatherton, Cannock WS11 1RR) Re : Pitch 2 ( the nearest astro pitch to the clubhouse ) – Team / Players to meet at Stafford Hockey Club at 12.00pm ( mid-day ) for journey to Cannock Hockey Club – 3 Drivers required for this game, so if you can drive fathom players to this game, I would appreciate if you could let me know, by texting me on 07966398190.

Then after this game there will be 2 weeks off Re : Christmas / New Year and the next Stafford Fathom game in the new year ( i.e. Saturday 5th. January 2013 ) is against Ludlow Fathoms, which is now a home game at Beaconside Re : 10am push back.
