Over 40’s cup game

As some of you may know the vets team were supposed to be playing Worcester HC away this weekend in the next round of the Masters Vase.  Unfortunately because of all the rearranged fixtures we have had to concede the game as despite efforts this week the tie could not be moved.

Sunday 27 Jan – Droitwich 2’s – 1 – Stafford 2’s – 2

Stafford rebounded from the very dissapointing 5 – 3 defeat vs Redditch with a better perfomance against a very game Droitwich team.

Stafford rebounded from the very disappointing 5 – 3 defeat vs Redditch with a better performance against a very game Droitwich team.

As with any rearranged fixture, the team is always likely to be slightly different to the usual, and this led to a well deserved debut for Steve Morton, who played with a level of assurance and calmness which will no doubt aid the third team for the remainder of the season, as will the return of Dave Parr, whose ‘shooting’ practice has evidently paid off

A very cagey game started with Droitwich attaching from the very first whistle, and putting Stafford under a good deal of pressure, which the defence dealt with very well. about halfway through the half Stafford started to wake up, and started moving the ball around with the confidence we had t the start of the season, finding the wingers with good balls out to the corners – taking advantage of the sandy, slow pitch.

As the half wore on, Stafford’s pressure finally told, with Dave Parr slotting home after the initial good save from the Droitwich keeper.

Half time came, and we were content with the lead, knowing that we were well below our best and we needed to get at least another goal to make the game safe. Stafford continued to try and pass their way around, but the accuracy and ball speed started to drop away as our rustiness showed, and Droitwich started peppering the Stafford goal, with the team indebted to Pog for a number of very sharp saves.

About 10 minutes from the end of the game, Stafford earned themselves a short corner, which the captain duly put away with a once-in-a-lifetime moment – flicking the ball from the top of the D, over the outstretched stick of the keeper and into the bottom corner.

That gave us the cushion we were desperate for, and try as thy might, Droitwich were unable to force their way through the resolute Stafford rearguard, until the very last short corner – completed after the final whistle – led to an 11 on 5 situation from which they finally scored their deserved goal.

A very friendly but competitive game saw Stafford just about sneak the win, but the performances will need to be lifted for the following three games.

Scorers – Dave Parr, Gareth Minton
MOTM – Guy Malpass.

1st Team Match Report v Kingswinford

Stafford Hockey Club 1st team got their second half of this years West Midlands Division 1 campaign to the worst possible start losing 8-2 away to Kingswinford HC.

Stafford were terribly disappointed in their performance, as it was the first game of the season that they had really let themselves down.  The game started well for Stafford, who were able to carve out some decent chances against a slow defence.  Dan Howe was unlucky twice not to finish from a tight angle.  Stafford also won a couple of penalty corners but could not take advantage, Giles Rowden blasting his shot too wide from the first.

After this, Kingswinford were able to take control and scored at a penalty corner, the forward literally walking his way past the static Stafford defence.  A second goal soon followed when Rowden was guilty of giving the ball away in midfield the Kingswinford forward made his way into the circle without a challenge and scored reverse stick.

After that Stafford continued to press but were caught out with some sloppy counter attack goals.  After half time Stafford started to create some pressure and scored when Dan Howe slapped the ball in after a James Gillingham pass.  However after that the Stafford defence were shown up when the experienced Kingswinford team were able to pass the ball neatly round at will and score some easy goals.  Stafford got a late consolation when Dan Howe dinked the ball over the opposition keeper.

A very poor performance from Stafford who looked sluggish after the Christmas break, next week they face bottom club Droitwich HC at Baconside, 1.00pm push back.
