Stafford Hockey Club 1st team faced a tough double header last weekend against legaue leaders Market Drayton HC and 4th placed Bloxwich HC. Unfortuately for the Riverway team they ended up losing both games, 5-1 and 6-1 respectively.
Stafford have suffered at times this season for trying to play expansive and attractive hockey against clinical teams. On Saturday they took the game to Market Drayton, who were on the back foot in the early stages. However they won an early penalty corner which was well dispatched by the Drayton player. Further goals followed, mainly from Stafford mistakes but in the second half Stafford did manage to create some goood chances. The best goal of the game was scored by Stafford, a great run from Andy Peatfield found Dan Howe at the far post who slid his shot under the advancing keeper. It was unfortunately merely a consolation as Drayton were able to extend their lead with a couple of somewhat lucky goals.
On Sunday, Stafford travelled to Bloxwich in confident mood despite the result the day before. However it was at times more of the same, mistakes gave the opposition opportunities to score. A missed tackle allowed the Bloxwich forward the opportunity to enter the circle and side step Brad Evans in goal for an early lead. Stafford then pulled back through a Giles Rowden penalty corner goal, but further sloppy goals were conceded by Stafford. In the second half Stafford should have scored a couple themselves but their composure seemed to desert them in front of goal. The one bright point was the performance of 17 year old Dan Rennie, who deservedly won man of the match.
Next week Stafford face second placed Wednesbury HC at Beaconside, 1.00pm push back.
