1st Team Match Report v Droitwich HC

Stafford HC 1st team got their season back on track last weekend, with a pretty emphatic 5-0 victory against bottom team Droitwich HC.  The bad weather had forced Stafford’s last two games to be postponed, so the Riverway team knew they had to be at the top of their game against a young side.

Thankfully Stafford showed great determination from the start, dominating the early exchanges, they got an early goal when Giles Rowden played the ball into the path of James Gillingham who slotted it home.  They soon doubled their lead when Ben Hollands was given too much time at a switched penalty corner, his clinical shot beat gave the keeper no chance.  Stafford did then seem to wobble, and Simon Parnell had to put in a couple of key tackles to ensure Stafford did not concede.

However, a couple of sharp goals soon increased the lead, the first from Adam Kyle who shot reverse stick side from an acute angle.  The best goal of the game was scored by Andrew Barnett, he ghosted into the circle and Gillingham played the ball into his path, man of the match Barnett then expertly guided the ball first time past an onrushing keeper.  It was 4-0 at half time and credit to Droitwich in the second half who kept plugging away, they made sure that goalkeeper Brad Evans had to make some smart saves to keep his first clean sheet of the season.

The final goal of the game was scored by Rowden who picked up a rebound of the goalkeeper’s pads to fire home past the helpless defenders. A great performance by Stafford who will hope they can maintain this type of performance away against league leaders Market Drayton next weekend.

Result – Bromsgrove 2’s – 2, Stafford 2’s – 3

After a very poor 10 minute spell at the start of the game, Stafford finally woke up and played sone of their best hockey of the season to record an excellent 3-2 win against Bromsgrove, making up for the earlier result in the season.

Dan Rennie scored a fantastic double, rifling shots past the keeper for fun, and Charlie Trotter also got a much deserved goal. Dan Rennie also won the award for man of the match, in what was the best team performance to date. Stafford 2’s will again be looking to avenge a defeat next week, when Stone are the visitors to Beaconside
