1st Team Match Report v Old Wulfs

Stafford HC 1st team lost 5-0 last weekend away to Old Wulfrunians HC.  Despite the scoreline it was a positive performance by a very young Stafford team, because of injury and unavailability, Stafford fielded 6 players under the age of 18.

Stafford started well enough, putting the opposition under a lot of consistent pressure, unfortunately they were not able to force a goal.  The closest they came was when Giles Rowden made the goal keeper save well after a reverse stick shot.  Old Wulfs then bundled a goal in at the other end after a Stafford missed tackle.  Stafford kept on attacking and were unlucky not to score after a great move between Elliott Glennen and Alex Peatfield.

The score remained 1-0 until half time, because of their position in the league they decided to push forward in the second half.  Despite 10 minutes pressure they were unable to grab a goal back, even after winning 5 penalty corners.  Unfortunately Stafford then conceding two quick breakaway goals and the game opened up.  Stafford should have scored when Andy Peatfield had the goal at his mercy but was unable to beat the last defender.

Old Wulfs then scored to late goals to leave the result beyond doubt. The result did not mirror the game, and there were some great individual performances from James Falconbridge and man of the match Charlie Trotter.  Stafford need to avoid defeat next weekend at home against Kidderminster to ensure survival in West Midlands Division 1.

Match report – 2nds vs Old Wulfs

Bad traffic led to a late arrival at WGS and meant we could not do as thorough a warm up as we wanted, leading to a very slow start, which our opponents took advantage of. Stafford fell behind to a sloppy goal, but soon countered back through Dave parr through a well worked short corner. Old Wulfs then bit back and took the lead again but Stafford replied with a quick 3pass move which was well finished by Bendall. We then conceded another sloppy goal before half time to be one down at the break.

We had a much improved performance in the second half, dominating the play, but we could not find our way past the in form old Wulfs goalie, and harshly lost 3-2.

1st Team Match Report v Solihull Blossomfield

Stafford HC 1st team, secured a vital three points in a hard won 3-2 victory against Solihull Blossomfield HC.  As soon as Stafford started the game they knew they were going to have a tough time against a good opponent.  Solihull had the best of the early exchanges winning a number of penalty corners, 15 year old Brad Evans in goal pulled of several excellent saves to keep the Riverway team in the game.  Eventually Stafford eased their way into the game, winning a penalty corner of their first meaningful attack.

The ball was slipped left by Adam Kyle, who found Ben Hollands in a bit of space, his first shot was saved well but he was able to slot the rebound in.  Stafford were then able to take control, creating a number of chances, Chris Sunderland saw his first time shot saved well by the opposition keeper.  Stafford went into the break a goal up and started the second half pushing for a second, it came when Andy Peatfield played the ball into Kyle who’s first time shot gave the keeper no chance.

Stafford have not made things easy for themselves the season and they started to wobble as nerves began to show, Blossomfield got a goal back after a quick break, the ball was slipped to a forward who deflected it neatly home.  Stafford then managed to do what they have failed to do all season and scored a third goal.  Another penalty corner was won by Sunderland, the ball was slipped right to Peatfield who flicked it home from a narrow angle.

Things got a bit desperate to the end, Stafford conceded a penalty stroke, which man of the match Evans just failed to stop.  However Stafford were able to hang on for the victory.  The result sees them climb two places out of the relegation zone, knowing three points from the last two games will see them safe.  Next week they make the trip to Old Wulfs who are one place above.
