Stafford HC 1st team lost 5-0 last weekend away to Old Wulfrunians HC. Despite the scoreline it was a positive performance by a very young Stafford team, because of injury and unavailability, Stafford fielded 6 players under the age of 18.
Stafford started well enough, putting the opposition under a lot of consistent pressure, unfortunately they were not able to force a goal. The closest they came was when Giles Rowden made the goal keeper save well after a reverse stick shot. Old Wulfs then bundled a goal in at the other end after a Stafford missed tackle. Stafford kept on attacking and were unlucky not to score after a great move between Elliott Glennen and Alex Peatfield.
The score remained 1-0 until half time, because of their position in the league they decided to push forward in the second half. Despite 10 minutes pressure they were unable to grab a goal back, even after winning 5 penalty corners. Unfortunately Stafford then conceding two quick breakaway goals and the game opened up. Stafford should have scored when Andy Peatfield had the goal at his mercy but was unable to beat the last defender.
Old Wulfs then scored to late goals to leave the result beyond doubt. The result did not mirror the game, and there were some great individual performances from James Falconbridge and man of the match Charlie Trotter. Stafford need to avoid defeat next weekend at home against Kidderminster to ensure survival in West Midlands Division 1.
