Stafford Men’s HC 1st team finished their pre-season with an encouraging 2-2 against league above Wednesbury HC.
Stafford started well against Wednesbury, taking control of the midfield with hard work from Ben Hollands and Ben Cantrill. Chances were created by Andy Peatfield and Dan Rennie, but Stafford took the lead after Giles Rowden robbed a Wednesbury player, passed the ball to Randall Moore who set pace man Peatfield through, he neatly side stepped the keeper before calmly finishing.
Stafford then seemed to sit back and conceded no less than 8 penalty corners, great work from Cantrill and Brad Evans in goals, saw the opposition denied until eventually a straight shot saw Evans beaten. Stafford then started to take control, winning their own corner, that was beautifully dispatched by Randall Moore with a powerful drag flick.
In the second half, Stafford seemed in control with solid defending by Simon Parnell and Mike Wattley. Wednesbury were clearly getting frustrated and Stafford threatened to take control, unfortunately they found a Wednesbury keeper in great form, denying Moore twice in quick succession.
Wednesbury then scored their second after Jimmy Singh decided to take out his obvious frustration by smashing a shot beautifully into the top corner of the net! Stafford could and should perhaps have scored the winner but a competitive and spirited game saw the score level at full time.
Stafford start their league campaign next weekend away against Solihull Blossomfield.

Our cup game is on Sunday 20th October, Nuneaton away. Please keep it free- it’s a game we should win.
The second team cup game has been confirmed as an away trip to Belper. Please keep the 13th clear if possible – we will need the strongest team we can get!!!
Stafford HC 1sts travelled to Keele University last weekend to play Market Drayton HC, narrowly losing 3-2 to last years league champions.
Stafford were hopeful of upsetting the odds against the Shropshire team but were unable to exert any pressure in the early stages. Drayton gradually increased the pressure on the Stafford circle, eventually winning a penalty corner. Brad Evans in goal saved the first shot well but Stafford were unable to clear and another corner was awarded. This time the drag flick seemed to go through Evans for Drayton to take the lead.
Stafford were then guilty of switching off as the Drayton sweeper pushed forward and was given the ball on the edge of the circle, his shot was well executed to double the Drayton lead. A few tactical switches saw Stafford eventually create some chances, wing back Andy Barnett looked like he would score but somehow managed to miss from a few feet out.
In the second half, Stafford played much better and soon pulled a goal back when Andy Peatfield used his pace to beat his man, Randall Moore then waltzed past the keeper and laid the ball off to Dan Howe who slotted it home from a narrow angle. Stafford then got another back when Steve Marsh’s shot was saved illegally on the line and Ben Cantrill flicked the penalty home for his third goal in as many games.
Unfortunately Stafford could not score anymore goals and Drayton got the winning goal after a slick penalty corner routine gave Brad Evans no hope. Evans was deservedly awarded man of the match for a string of excellent saves. Stafford were obviously disappointed but should take some reassurance from a much improved second half performance against a good team. Next week they are away against Wednesbury HC.
Market Drayton 3-2 Stafford
Scorers: Howe, Cantrill
MOTM: Brad Evans
DOTD: Richard Buka
Stafford continued their strong pre season with a good performance against Old Sils, who supplemented their already strong 2nd team with a smattering of first teamers who stayed pitchside after a training session.
Old Sils proved to be much more resilient than our opponents from last week, and Stafford came out just as hard, with the ball being held up in the middle of the pitch for long periods. Stafford eventually took the lead with a great passing move using the wings, allowing Jack Ball to slot home on debut. Old Siks struck back a few minutes later and snatched a goal just before half time.
An enthusiastic team talk saw Stafford playing some flowing hockey, but our disapproval at a poor umpiring decision meant a further goal was conceded needlessly. This woke Stafford up, and we struck back with 3 well taken goals, much to the chagrin of our opponents, who snatched a late equaliser with a couple of minutes to go, leaving Stafford disappointed with a 4 all draw away at higher league opposition.
Scorers – Jack Ball – 2, James Faulconbridge – 1, Rich Bendall, – 1
MOTM – Jack Ball
DOTD – Elliot Glennon
