Missing Kit

1st Team Match Report v Stone

Stafford Hockey Club 1st team, continued their positive pre-season progress with an excellent 6-3 victory over higher league and local rivals Stone HC.

Stafford were able to field a full team including the excellent Randall Moore, Stone were apparently missing a few players but still fielded a strong team.  In an energetic start, Stafford were certainly not overawed and attacked strongly.  Moore won a penalty corner and his shot was saved well by the Stone goal-keeper.  It didn’t take long for Stafford to take the league, good work by Guy Malpass saw Dan Howe have a shot, that was saved well before Andy Peatfield was able to slot the ball in at the far post.

Soon afterwards Stafford doubled their tally when Peatfield was upended outside of the circle, a resultant penalty was awarded and Ben Cantrill calmly placed the ball into the corner.  Stone seemed to wake up after this and were able to exert some pressure, after good work by Rob Colclough in  defence, Stone broke quickly and won a corner off Steve Marsh’s foot.  Brad Evans in goal got a glove to the subsequent flick but couldn’t keep it out.

Stafford then scored a third in similar circumstances, Moore slot his flick beautifully into the bottom corner.  After the break the game seemed to open up, Stafford got another goal when Moore lobbed the ball over a stranded keeper, allowing Charlie trotter to score.  Stone then got themselves back into the game with Lawrence Basset and John Alchin at the heart of most of their good work.  Another corner goal went in after a deflection off Ben Hollands, and then Bassett grabbed one himself after Simon Parnell failed to stop the ball.

Nerves seemed to be getting to Stafford as Stone then went on to hit the post twice before two late goals from Stafford settled matters, firstly Moore intercepted a loose pass and smashed the ball into the bottom corner.  He then unselfishly played the ball to Dan Howe on the far post who deflected it home to take the glory.

In what was an excellent game played and umpired in good spirits, Stafford were very pleased with the performance and despite a superb performance by Moore it was 16 year old Charlie Trotter who took the man of the match award.  Next week Stafford are away to Market Drayton HC.

Result – Kidderminster 1sts – 0, Stafford 2nds – 11 (eleven )

Stafford 2nds made amends for last week’s poor result with a stunning and dominant performance against a weakened Kidderminster 1sts. From the first minute Stafford played some flowing attacking hockey, with some brilliant one touch play. James Gillingham’s first goal in the 3rd minute set Stafford up for one of the best halves of hockey seen in the 2’s, and deservedly 7-0 up at half time. Kidderminster improved after the break but Stafford still dominated and rattled in another 4 before the game came to a close. To a man Stafford were all impressive, and even though the goal scorers will get the headlines, the whole team contributed to a fantastic performance.

Scorers – R Bendall – 5
James Gillingham – 6

1st Team Match Report v North Stafford 2nds

Stafford HC 1st team got their season off to a positive start with a great game against North Stafford HC 2nd team, the final result being 5-5.

Stafford who are now sponsored by Greyfriars Commercial Catering Installations, started well creating some great early opportunities, unfortunately they were unable to get any meaningful shots on target, Andy Peatfield and Dan Rennie coming closest.

North Stafford who had included a number of first team players in their side then scored a goal really against the run of play.  A quick break saw keeper Brad Evans make a good first save, only for Phil Harper to pick up the rebound and put his shot goalward, Captain Richard Buka was unable to stop the shot on the line.

Stafford were then able to create a bit more sustained pressure, the skills of Dan Rennie saw him turn his marker at the top of the circle and he piled his shot into the bottom corner to equalise.  Stafford then scored a second after a Steve Marsh cross was eventually bundled in at the far post by Charlie Trotter.  Things got even better for Stafford when Dan Howe played the ball over the opposition keeper after a great run and pass by Andy Peatfield.

So Stafford were in completed control at half time, but after the break, North Staffs came out strong, Harper probing the Stafford defence. A cross from the right hit an opposition forwards foot but was not spotted by the umpire and the ball was played into the goal.  Stafford were obviously upset by the decision and seemed to lose concentration.  North Staffs scored a third after a slip right saw Harper slot the ball into the goal from another penalty corner.

Stafford then scored another after debutant and ex North Stafford player crashed the ball in to the goal after taking a quick free hit, Ben Hollands then got the fifth after finding himself free at the far post.

There was still time for North Staffs to score two late goals after some controversial decisions, to equalise the game.

A great competitive start to the season for Stafford who will need to learn to keep their composure in future games.  Next Saturday Stafford play local rivals Stone HC at Beaconside, 1.00pm push back.

Result – North Stafford 3’s – 2, Stafford 2’s – 1

Stafford tackled north Staffs in their first preseason game, finishing with a loss which went against the run of play. We spurned a number of chances, with wayward finishing and a distinct lack of composure completely undoing some excellent build up play. The start of the second half saw a sluggish Stafford stunned with 2 quick goals, and even though we battled and pulled one back, North Staffs went very much on the defensive and just about saw the game out.

Scorer – Gareth Minton

MOTM – joint between James Faulconbridge, Ian Robertson and Elliot Glennon

(Deserved) DOTD – Gareth Minton
