Stafford HC 1st team took the honours last weekend away against Staffordshire rivals Tamworth, winning 6-1 to go top of West Midlands Division 1.
However as per normal Stafford started poorly, seemingly unable to string passes together. Tamworth capitalised on a loose pass and broke down the left, a missed tackle by Simon Parnell allowed the winger to cross the ball to the far post, leaving Brad Evans stranded, 1-0 to Tamworth. It could have been worse when a similar move saw a Tamworth forward in front of goal with just the last defender to beat, his shot was topped and Giles Rowden was able to clear the ball.
After this Stafford woke up and were able to put some pressure on the Tamworth circle, a couple of rash challenges saw penalty corners awarded. Ben Hollands equalised after a Randall Moore shot was saved, Hollands smashing the rebound home. Stafford then took the lead with a slipped corner to Ben Cantrill, a talented ballet dancer in his youth, who pirouetted and hit the ball home.
1-1 at half time but after the break it was one way traffic, Moore was leaving his markers for dust and creating some good chances, an inform keeper was the only thing keeping him at bay. Eventually he scored his first after great work by man of the match John Peatfield, a well placed pass to Moore allowed him to slot it home. Dan Rennie then scored a lovely deflected goal after sneaking behind his marker, Moore completed his hat-trick, with a couple of unstoppable shots.
There was still time for Stafford to hit the post twice but the result was beyond doubt. Stafford went top to join the 2nd team in a similar position in their league and the 3rd team in second position. Its becoming a stella season for the Riverway Club. Next weekend the 1st team have a blank fixture before returning to league action away against Ludlow on the 7th December.
