Stafford HC 1st team travelled to Much Wenlock last weekend to play Ludlow HC, they were left frustrated losing 1-0.
For once Stafford started well enough, winning a number of penalty corners. A slip from Randall Moore to Ben Cantrill found the latter in space, he seemed to be pushed off the ball but the infringement was not spotted by the umpire.
Unfortunately a yellow card for Andy Peatfield and an unsavory incident involving players from both sides, seemed to take the wind out of the Stafford sails and the game became disjointed. Stafford did win another penalty corner but this broke down and Ludlow were able to break, the ball was played into the circle and deflected off Simon Parnell’s foot into the path of a Ludlow forward who was able to put the ball into the goal.
After that the game became scrappy, Randall Moore had the best chance but his reverse stick shot came off the bar, Ludlow had a few chances but were unable to finish. Stafford pushed higher in the second half but tight marking and some lacklustre running seemed to nullify the Riverway side and the game remained 1-0 at the end.
If Stafford want to get promoted this season, they need to work on their discipline and be prepared to put the effort in for 70 minutes. Next week they round off the first half of the season against Leamington Spa HC at Beaconside, 1.00pm push back.
