Stafford HC 1sts continued their impressive 2014 form last weekend with a 3-2 win against higher league opposition Wednesbury HC.
In Stafford’s last friendly fixture before the resumption of the league, the Riverway side were pretty dominant. The home side got off to a great start, scoring within the first five minutes. A counter attack started by a Simon Parnell pass out of the back found Randall Moore in space, he drifted past a couple of static defenders and laid the ball into the path of Dan Howe who blasted home.
Unfortunately Stafford then seemed to sit back and allowed Wednesbury some space, to win a penalty corner. Rich Dean saved well but Stafford could not clear the ball and Jimmy Singh scored with a bobbling shot. Stafford through Captain Richard Buka won their own penalty corner and Randall Moore powered the ball into the net with a trademark drag flick.
Not learning their lesson, Stafford then conceded another at a penalty corner, again failing to clear the ball but took the lead for the final time when a quick counter attack involving Andy Peatfield and Charlie Trotter saw James Gillingham deflect the ball neatly home.
Wednesbury were better in the second half when Singh played higher but the Stafford defence held firm and with man of the match Andy Barnett breaking down play in the midfield, Stafford held out for the win.
Next week Stafford face Solihull Blossomfield at home in a game that will probably dictate whether Stafford can push for promotion, 1.00pm start at Beaconside.
