1st Team Match Report v Wolverhampton – ‘Howe did Dan not score?’

Stafford HC 1st team got off to a great 2014 with an impressive 2-1 away victory against Wolverhampton HC.

Wolverhampton play their league hockey two divisions above Stafford and seemed confident they were going to see the Riverway team off.  They started well, surprising the Stafford side with pace up front and won an early penalty corner, the ball was slipped left and a somewhat lucky touch saw the home side take the lead.

Stafford were not overawed and got themselves back into the game, as per normal hard work by Ben Hollands in midfield saw Stafford dominate that area, this freed up Randall Moore to torment the opponents.  Unselfish play by Moore saw Dan Howe presented with numerous chances but despite a total of 11 attempts he could not beat the Wolves keeper.

Wolverhampton were quick to counter attack and some brilliant goal keeping by Richard Dean thwarted their attacks and the game remained 1-0 at half time.  After the break, Stafford continued to dominate, Howe still could not find the back of the net but Stafford eventually equalized from a penalty corner.  The ball was slipped back to Hollands injecting, who swept the ball home.

After that it was really only a matter of time, eventually Moore decided to show his class by ghosting past two players to unleash a shot into the roof of the net.  Wolverhampton had a couple of chances late on but resolute defending by Guy Malpass and Andy Barnett saw Stafford take the win.

A new style Stafford will be confident going into next weeks friendly against Wednesbury HC at Beaconside, 1.00pm start.
