1st Team Match Report v Kingswinford

Stafford HC 1st team travelled to lowly Kingswinford HC last weekend, returning with a point in a 2-2.

Although the hockey was not particularly attractive at times, the game did ebb and flow.  Kingswinford set up very defensively to try and blunt Stafford and it certainly worked in the first 15 minutes as Stafford could not turn their domination into a goal.  Stafford won a number of penalty corners but found an in form goal keeper who stopped everything.

Andy Peatfield had the best chance, beating his man before chipping the goal keeper, his shot sailing over.  Then Stafford fell for the sucker punch as Kingswinford had their only meaningful chance of the half, poor marking saw a midfielder slot home after Brad Evans saved the first shot.

Stafford did not panic at half time and came out still playing nice hockey, eventually James Gillingham equalized after he pounced on the rebound from his first shot.  Stafford then took the lead after Randall Moore powered in an unstoppable drag flick.

Kingswinford then had to push forward and when Stafford failed to clear the ball, won a somewhat debatable penalty corner and duly equalized.

A disappointing result but a strangely enjoyable tactical affair, a positive note was a lack of any cards whatsoever from two teams and two umpires who were only interested in the hockey being played on the pitch. Great hospitality after the game by the hosts as well, best teas in the league.

Result – Stafford 2nds – 6, Redditch 2nds – 2

The second team bandwagon moved on with an efficient performance from a very determined Stafford team, who knew that a win today would set up next week’s crunch game with Stone.

Stafford dominated the first half and could easily have had more than their 3-2 lead at half time – redditch indebted to their gk who produced a number of saves to keep the likes of Howe and Sunderland at bay.

Fortunately he was powerless to stop Jack Ball.

As the second half wore on Stafford started to put their chances away as our opponents tired, and the final score line of 6-2 did not flatter us – but I would be a little biased.

Stafford go into next week’s game knowing that a win will almost ensure promotion. If other results go our way today, promotion can be sealed next weekend – let’s hope Telford got a win today.

For such a big game against our local rivals it would be great to get as much support as we can – we will be starting at 2:30 in stone, so if you can come down after any games (or before) it would be great!!!

1st Team Match Report v Redditch

Stafford HC 1st team lost out 5-4 to Redditch HC in controversial circumstances last weekend.  In a more or less repeat of the first fixture, Stafford’s poor discipline saw them press the self-destruct button in the second half.

Stafford scored within the first five minutes when James Gillingham’s smart deflection was parried by the goal keeper but Charlie Trotter slotted the rebound home.  Redditch then equalized after Simon Parnell got turned by his player who then passed to a man out wide to slot home.

An unsavory incident then occurred when Adam Kyle was grabbed around the neck by a Redditch player, the umpire showed a yellow card when most people including the player himself expected a red.  Stafford began to play better hockey, Randall Moore powering an unstoppable reverse stick effort into the roof of the net and Ben Hollands making it 3-1 just after the break with a similar effort.

Unfortunately after this, physical play by Redditch seemed to get to Stafford and their frustration showed in their responses to the umpires, and a number of temporary suspensions followed to Stafford players and Stafford conceded 4 goals.  Adam Kyle pulled one back near the end but the contest was over.

Stafford are a team who like to play expansive, attractive hockey but they need to learn how to cope with the pressure when things are going against them.  Next week they have Kingswinford HC away.

Result – Old Wulfs 2nds – 2, Stafford 2nds – 4

Stafford gained a measure of revenge against a stubborn Old Wulfs team to extend their unbeaten run going into their top vs bottom clash with Redditch next week.

Stafford will take heart from not conceding through open play for the second week in a row, and will look to keep improving as the season draws to a close.

R. Bendall, M. Wymer and C Sunderland

1st Team Match Report v Bloxwich

Stafford HC 1st team travelled to Bloxwich HC last weekend, returning with all three points in a mammoth 11-2 victory!  Stafford started brilliantly, seemingly carving out chances at will, the opening goal came after Andrew Barnett was pushed over in the circle.  Randall Moore fired a shot under an advancing goal keeper to retake his spot as league top goal scorer.

One soon became two when a pass made by the hard working James Gillingham found Andy Peatfield diving to deflect the ball home.  Then Ben Hollands smashed the ball home on the reverse to leave Bloxwich stunned.  Unfortunately a nasty mouth injury to a Bloxwich player seemed to deflate the home side and Stafford took full advantage.  Moore scored a first half hat trick with a trademark reverse stick shot and then a drag flick, Peatfield grabbed a second to leave the score at 6-0 at half time.

Credit to Bloxwich in the second half who kept pushing forward in search of a goal but leaving gaps at the back.  For once it was Andy Peatfield who outstaged Randall Moore by grabbing two more goals, his pace allowing him the opportunity to beat his markers and find the bottom corner.  Dan Howe got two after unselfish play from James Gillingham and Giles Rowden, Bloxwich deservedly pulled two late goals back after some determined play.

On the final whistle Stafford won a penalty corner and Ben Cantrill smashed the ball home to complete the rout.

So Stafford are back in form and will be looking to maintain the momentum against Redditch HC next weekend at Beaconside, 1.00pm start.

Stafford Fathom / 5th. Team Result :

Old Wulfs Fathoms 0 v Stafford Fathoms / 5ths 1 ( H/T : 0-0 )

Please contain yourself for the long winded Match Report, which will follow asap on this game.
