Stafford HC 1st team, wrapped up this years campaign with a professional 2-0 victory away at Leamington Spa HC. The opposition stunned Stafford in the first fixture winning 4-2, so the Riverway team knew they would have to take the game seriously.
Stafford started well with good work on either flank from Charlie Trotter and Andy Peatfield, possession soon turned into penalty corners, Ben Hollands opening the scoring after Trotter laid the ball into his path after a switched move. Soon afterwards, Stafford doubled their lead when Richard Bendall was upended in the circle and a penalty stroke was awarded, Ben Cantrill on his return from injury duly slotted home.
After this Stafford played possession hockey, the defensive trio of Gareth Minton, Simon Parnell and Giles Rowden, switching the ball to deflate a visibly tiring Leamington. In the second half, the opposition came into the game more with man of the match Richard Buka called upon in goals to make a number of crucial saves. Ironically enough Buka is normally an outfield player only playing in goals due to illness to Brad Evans!
Stafford continued to create chances but could not extend their lead further. In an up and down season, Stafford came 5th in the league, with a number of positive elements including the emergence of a real talent in Charlie Trotter and in having the league top goal scorer in Randall Moore, things are looking good for the Club and team.
