Stafford HC 2nd team got this years league campaign off to an impressive start, beating Streetly HC 2nds 5-1.
Streetly fielded a very young side, however they were very well drilled and showed good skills. It was not until late in to the second half that Stafford romped away with things. That said, the Riverway side did have the majority of possession.
Stafford opened the scoring after a characteristic late run from man of the match Jack Ball who deftly placed the ball past the onrushing keeper after a pass from Nathan Sillito. Streetly then stunned Stafford, equalizing through their only penalty corner of the game. The ball was heading wide before a touch from the injector put the ball into the roof of the net.
1-1 at half time but Stafford did not despair and came out determined to take all the points. Hard work from James Gillingham and the excellent James Wild, saw Stafford create a lot of chances, the best of which fell to Richard Bendall who hit the post.
However Streetly could not deny Stafford for long, eventually another Sillito ball found Andy Peatfield at the far post to smash it home. The flood gates opened after this and goals from James Gilllingham and two from Bendall put a gloss on the result which did not really do Streetly justice.
A great start from the young Stafford team who are away next week to Bloxwich HC.
On another positive note, Stafford HC fielded six teams last weekend for the first time since the 1970’s. The Club welcomes players of all ages and experiences, please see www.staffordhc.co.uk for more details.
