Stafford HC 2nd team travelled to Bloxwich HC last weekend and returned with a 5-2 victory to take them to the top of their respective 2nd team league.
Blowich had won their first league game 4-2 so Stafford new they were not going to be a push over, Stafford started brightly with eventual man of the match, Jack Ball causing chaos in the opposition defence, indeed within the first ten minutes he had hit the post twice.
Unfortunately Stafford then started to allow a bit of complacency to slip into their game and a couple of defensive errors saw them concede a penalty corner. The resulting shot was accurately fired past a despairing Paul Taylor-Grime in goal.
Stafford did not panic and good work by Elliot Glennan and Nathan Silitto saw James Gillingham score at the far post. Not to be undone, the hard-working opposition kept plugging away and scored a second after Stafford failed to clear the lines. Stafford though went into half-time with a 2-2 score line thanks to another neat Gillingham finish at the far post.
After the break Stafford began to run away with things, constant pressure on the Bloxwich defence saw them concede penalty corners and Silitto slotted a lovely drag flick over the shoulder on the stoic keeper.
Bloxwich then started to panic somewhat and Stafford took advantage late on, with Richard Bendall scoring a brace. A good game, with excellent umpiring saw the young(ish) Riverway team put in another encouraging performance. Next week they are at home to Shrewbury 2nds – 1.00pm start at Beaconside.
