Stafford HC 2nd team confirmed a second place finish at the end of a great season by beating Stone HC 4-1 last weekend.
Stafford started well with a powerful Steve Marsh pass finding Richard Bendall in space, he went round the goal keeper and calmly played the ball into the unguarded net. After that, nerves seemed to set in and Stone were able to settle into the game. Despite a few chances, great defensive work by Andy Simms and Alex Peatfield saw the visitors denied.
1-0 at half time saw Stafford pushing for a second goal, a penalty corner won be Will Trotter saw Steve Marsh put a slipped pass into the goal. Stone then started to push forward and created some good chances, man of the match Paul Taylor-Grime in goal kept them out. Eventually he was beaten when a penalty corner was gifted to Stone, Simon Harrison scored with a deflected shot.
Thankfully instead of capitulating, Stafford pushed on and scored two late goals, Dave Anderson scored with a trade mark drag flick and Giles Rowden pounced on a poor pass and blasted the ball past a hapless keeper. A high quality game played in great spirits was an excellent way to wrap up the season.
Unless there is a league reshuffle, Stafford should be promoted into the West Midlands Premier league, a challenge that the team are already looking forward to.
