Stafford HC 1st team put in a positive performance to draw 1-1 against West Bromwich HC. Very warm conditions and a brand new bouncy pitch saw Stafford struggle to hold onto the ball in the early stages.
The Riverway team eased their way into the game with some composed play from Alex Peatfield and Mike Watley, Andy Barnett and Andy Peatfield played some raking passes up to Charlie Trotter and Giles Rowden.
Eventually the pressure told and chances were created, Rowden and Trotter both forcing saves from the excellent West Brom keeper. Up the other end, new goal keeper Tom Dean-Netscher made some smart saves to deny the opposition.
Stafford took the lead after a quick pass into the circle from Piers Wooller found Trotter whose shot bounced past the goalie into the net. Stafford should have extended their lead but could not finish from a number of penalty corner chances.
Unfortunately Stafford conceded a weak equaliser after an unlucky umpiring decision but to their credit keep plugging away. A couple of late shots from Wooller were well saved.
A good game played in an excellent spirit with impressive umpiring will set Stafford up nicely against higher league friendly opposition Wednesbury next week, 1.00pm start on the newly relaid Beaconside AstroTurf.
