Urgent Call for Help

Hi All

I have been asked to post a request for helpers to aid Rob Peatfield in setting up the new Goals at Beaconside, those of you at training would appreciate the current ones are not up to scratch and the only way we’ll have the new goals in place for Saturday is if we put them together ourselves.

Rob will be at Beaconside with all the tools required from 3pm Tomorrow (Friday) As many helpers as possible would be great.

Stafford Fathoms having last week just been beaten 2-1 at home to Cannock Fathoms with Glynn Bibby scoring the solitary goal for Stafford, this week saw them travelling to Whitchurch, with a fathom team with only 8 players and numerous changes to the side which played Cannock Fathoms last week, as a number of players were either unavailable to play in this game or they had been promoted to Stafford 5th Team i.e. Glynn Bibby. However, Whitchurch Hockey Club / Fathom Team came to Stafford Fathom’s rescue by providing them with 3 young out players to make their team up to 11 and Neil Jinks ( who went in goals for Stafford Fathoms ) and Jon Prout both volunteered their services to the Stafford Fathom Team, as they were playing later in the day for Stafford 4ths at Beaconside ( Re : 4pm pushback ) and young Edward Baker was making his first appearance of the season for Stafford Fathoms and Jake Jones was making his debut for Stafford Hockey Club / Stafford Fathoms.

Despite all these changes to the Stafford Fathom Team, they started well and were unlucky to go one down, but as per previous fathom games, heads didn’t drop and they stayed strong and they plugged away and just before half time some neat play, between the Stafford’s midfield and forward line saw one of Whitchurch’s young players playing for Stafford Fathoms go one on one with the Whitchurch Goalkeeper and beat him to level the scores and at half time Stafford Fathoms were justifiably level pegging with their hosts, Whitchurch.

The second half saw Stafford start really brightly with young Ed Baker and Kyle Rennie playing well in midfield and they were instrumental in setting up Jake Jone’s debut goal, which he took well and more importantly put Stafford into a well deserved lead. However, this goal seemed to spark Whitchurch into action and the game became very competitive with both sides creating numerous chances to score and despite some good defensive work by Stafford, especially by Jon Prout & young Tom Deakin ( who went onto be man of the match for Stafford Fathoms ), they were unable to prevent Whitchurch knocking the ball past Neil Jinks in Stafford Goals and levelling the score at 2-2. After this goal Whitchurch started to put Stafford under a lot more pressure and eventually they managed to break down the resolute Stafford defence and re-took the lead which they held onto until the end of the game, despite Stafford trying in vain to try and level the score at 3-3.

Tom Deakin was nominated / awarded Man of the Match for Stafford Fathom by John Sinclair, non-playing Stafford Fathom Captain who was watching the game on the sidelines due to injury.

Stafford Fathom’s next game this Saturday is a Home game to Tamworth Fathoms Re : 10am pushback at Beaconside and players selected to play in this fathom game need to meet at Beaconside at 9.30am and again the Stafford Fathom Team will be missing a number of players like their Vice Captain, Paul Rennie, young Edward Baker & Tom & Ben Deakin for this Saturday’s Fathom Game but they do have a number of players returning for this fathom game after not playing for a few weeks i.e. Ian & George Hodgkinson, Will Buckley, Peter Powers, Ollie-Joe Simmons & maybe young Joe Mullor.

Stafford Fathoms having last week just been beaten 3-2 away to Old Wulfs Fathoms with Glynn Bibby & Ian Hodkinson scoring for Stafford, this week though it saw them having to make numerous changes to their side which played Old Wulfs Fathoms last week, as 4 players were unavailable to play in this game against Cannock Fathoms and yet again Stafford found themselves playing a fathom side which was full of experienced & older players, but Stafford in order to replace the missing 4 players had to bring in players from other sides for this game in order to ensure they had at least 11 players available to play in this game and 4 of them had to be utilised from Stafford’s 1st. ( i.e. Daniel Rennie ), 2nd. ( i.e. Pog & Mav ) & 3rd. Teams ( i.e. Rob Peatfield ).

Even with Stafford Fathoms being strengthen by these experienced players from the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Team, they still had their work cut out in containing this experienced Cannock Fathom side who started the game well and also had a spare player sitting on the bench to call on and Pog playing in goals for Stafford Fathoms ( before playing for Stafford 2nds later ) for the first time this season, had to make a number of good saves early on in order to keep Stafford Fathoms in the game but despite this and some good defensive work by Stafford, they were unable to prevent Cannock taking the lead half way through the first half and at half time Cannock were in the lead by this single goal. The second half saw Stafford start brightly after Rob Peatfield, had given the half time team talk in which he encouraged the Stafford Team to go out in this second half and give it ago and it wasn’t long before some good work by Stafford was rewarded, when Glynn Bibby scored for Stafford Re : him levelling the scores at 1-1, plus it was his second goal for Stafford Fathoms, as he also scored last week for them. Stafford then started to try and find a way through Cannock Fathoms rear guard to see if they could take the lead, but Cannock soaked up the renewed vigour that Stafford now had from levelling the score-line and some neat play from Cannock half way through the second half saw them restore their lead, but just like previous weeks Stafford Fathoms didn’t let their heads drop and they battled to the end to try and get back into the game but Cannock held out and at the final whistle they ran out victors by two goals to one.

Harry Coltman was nominated / awarded Man of the Match for Stafford Fathoms by Jo Lovatt, Stafford Ladies Player Re : her watching the game on the sidelines as her partner, Glynn Bibby was playing for Stafford Fathoms.

Stafford Fathom’s next game this Saturday is an Away game to Whitchurch Fathoms and to-day I have been informed by Gary Jones of Whitchurch Hockey Club that the pushback this Saturday at Whitchurch Leisure Centre, Sir John Talbot School, Whitchurch Shropshire SY13 2BY is now at 12.30pm, not 3.30pm as originally informed / e mailed to me on 02-09-2014 by Alex Fry of Whitchurch Hockey Club and again their is likely to be a number of changes to the side as 8 players from the Cannock Fathom game last Saturday will either be playing for other teams in the club this Saturday ( i.e. Daniel Rennie for 1st. Team, Pog & Mav for 2nd. Team, Rob Peatfield for 3rd. Team & Taran Bassie, Tyler Murray & Harry Coltman for 5th. Team ) or aren’t available to play this Saturday ( i.e. Joe Mullor ) and all players picked to play in this fathom game this Saturday will need to meet at Stafford Hockey Club at 10.30am.

Stafford Fathoms had to wait until this Saturday to play their first home game of the season and again like last week were giving another young player, Ben Deakin ( brother of Tom Deakin ) his hockey debut in the side and they were also being watched from the sidelines by Stuart Sutton an Ex-Stafford Hockey Player who had come along to watch his young Grandson, Will Buckley play for Stafford Fathoms and I am sure as the game progressed that he picked up on the togetherness and experience that all Stafford Young Fathom Players had gained from playing in last Saturday’s fathom game away to Barlaston Fathoms / 2nd. Team and from the start Stafford started well and were holding their own against another opposition which like last week had a number of experienced players in it’s side. For 15 minutes both sides were evenly balanced and playing some nice hockey, but then North Staffs Fathoms were awarded a short corner and from it, they managed to take the lead from it, when Stafford didn’t defend it as well as they could of done. Stafford didn’t allow this set back to up-set them and just like last week they kept plugging away but unfortunately just as half time was looming North Staffs extended their lead, when Stafford didn’t mark as well as they had been and North Staffs nipped in to go 2-0 up.

The team talk at half time by Stafford Fathom Vice Captain, Paul Rennie to the rest of the team, was to ignore the score-line of 2-0, as both goals had been the only time Stafford’s young keeper had really been tested by in the first half and they both could have been prevented with a bit better defending. The team also needed to pass and communicate with one another a little bit better than they had been in the first half, as the experienced players in the North Staffs Fathom Team in the first half had managed to contain the raw energy of the youngsters in the Stafford Fathom Team, so when the second half started Stafford fathom youngsters took on board the half-time team talk and started well against North Staffs but the opposition did however up their game and started to test Stafford defence a lot more in this half than the first half and as a result Stafford Fathom Keeper, Tom Stanley had a lot more to deal with, which he dealt with splendidly and young Tom Deakin playing only his second competitive hockey game was doing a sterling job in midfield for Stafford, with some real good tackles and lay offs to fellow team mates and Kyle Rennie, George Hodgkinson and Will Buckley for Stafford were combining well up front for Stafford and were constantly testing the experienced North Staffs Fathoms Defence but eventually North Staffs got the better of Stafford and managed to score another 2 goals despite Stafford competing with them all over the pitch and at the final whistle North Staffs ran out 4-0 winners but just like last week the opposition praised the way Stafford Fathom Team had battled and kept going in a good, well fought and entertaining game.

Stuart Sutton as mentioned at the being of this report was watching the game from the side-lines and he was very impressed on how all players in the Stafford side had kept going and hadn’t let their heads drop at any time even though they eventually lost the game 4-0 and he was also asked before the game started if he minded naming a Man of the Match for Stafford Fathoms and after the game he nominated young Stafford Fathom Keeper, Tom Stanley as Man of the Match for his splendid performance in between the posts for Stafford and young Tom Deakin playing only his second game was also nominated / awarded Man of the Match for Stafford Fathoms, for all his hard work and endeavour in midfield for Stafford by Stafford Fathom Team Captain, John Sinclair.

Stafford Fathom’s next game this Saturday is an Away game to Old Wulfs Fathoms and is a 2.30pm pushback at Wolverhampton Grammar School, Compton Road, Wolverhampton WV3 9RB and all players picked to play in this fathom game will need to meet at 1.15pm at Stafford Hockey Club.

4th Team Match Report away to Telford

An excellent team performance saw us beat a strong Telford side 5 – 1, goals scored by Jack Fudger -2, Smon Burke 1, Jack Hodkinson 1 and John Faulconbridge 1.

Such a good team performance it does not seem right to highlight individual performances but Man of the Match was Jack Hodkinson for his tireless work in midfield closely followed by Jack Fudger not only for his goals but for tracking back and defending from the front and Tom Stanley for a promising debut in goal.

Dick of the day was a close run between myself for putting my head so low that a very small 14 year was able to put a stick in my face and John Faulconbridge who won the award, he made yet another strong drive down the left leaving defenders standing, it was going to be another cross for a goal scoring opportunity, he had the position, the ball and the defence beaten, unfortunately he had left his stick 20 yards behind him.

Rules on slide-tackles

Dear all,

We have received the following guidance from the umpires’ association. Please bear this in mind when playing and umpiring.

All players have a duty of care on the pitch. This means they should not tackle in a reckless way. If a player goes to ground in a tackle this in itself, is not an offence and should only be penalised in certain situations:

  1. A player goes to ground and plays the ball with the stick – NO OFFENCE
  1. A player deliberately goes to ground and prevents the ball going past with his/her body or leg then this should be a personal penalty and also the appropriate team penalty
  1. If a player slides in to tackle and takes the ball cleanly and only the ball – PLAY ON
  1. If a player slides in and takes the ball but then collides with the opposition player, this should be penalised accordingly as it is reckless and dangerous. The suggestion here is that contact with the opposition in this scenario would result in a 10 minute yellow card.
  1. If the contact with the opposition player is incidental and not in any way intentional or dangerous, you may get away with a lower penalty. However, this needs very careful management, if this is the approach adopted.

Stafford 1st XI vs Streetly Match Report – 04.10.14

Stafford 1st XI vs Streetly – 04.10.14Match Report

In what was a closely contested opening game of the 2014/2015 season, both Stafford and the freshly relegated Streetly had to settle for an even distribution of the points in a fast paced 2-2 draw at Streetly’s home pitch.

Following a string of disappointing results yet encouraging performances in pre-season, Stafford 1sts fielded a young side who showed great energy in the middle of the park and in the final third. A midfield diamond consisting of James Faulcounbridge, Charlie Trotter and Ethan Sweeney, all of whom are under 18, and stalwart captainCaptain Ben Holland provided a very high energy performance that, through grit and determination, provided Stafford with the chances necessary to break the deadlockk. A testing shot early on from Sweeney was a signal of things to come. The first goal came from a penetrating run from Piers Woollen, who was threat on the left flank all game, finding another young star Daniel Rennie, whose quick fire shot was deftly deflected over the keeper by Stafford’s front man Dan Howe. The first half ended 0-1 Stafford due to the stalwart defending of Simon Parnell, Dave Anderson, Colin Bishop and Richard Buka and a number of impressive saves from keeper Gareth Minton.

Stafford began the second half impressively after an inspiring talk from Coach Ed Wills by doubling their lead through the Captainn Ben Holland after a piercing pass from Howe and an impressive run from Rennie. As a result, Streetly upped their performance and pressure, with a number of D penetrations, ultimately resulting in a well worked short corner routine and Streetly’s first league goal. As tiredness set in, openings were becoming a feature of the game however it was Streetly who evened the scoring through an easy goal. A final blow to the Stafford side came in the form of a yellow card to midfielder Sweeney.

A good performance and a decent result in Stafford’s opening game away from home left the side leaving the pitch satisfied with the nature outcome of the game.

Push-Back : 2.00pm
Score : 13-0 ( H/T 6-0 ) ( Lost )

Scorers : None

MOM : Tom Stanley ( G/K ), Tom Deakin, Will Buckley, George Hodgkinson & Joe Mullor .
( All 5 Players Nominated by Stafford Fathom Team Captain, John Sinclair & Stafford Fathom Vice Captain, Paul Rennie )

Umpires : Dave Thurgarland umpired to help out Barlaston Fathoms, as they only could provide 1 umpire for this game ( but he left 15 minutes before the end of game Re : him captaining Stafford 4ths at Beaconside at 4pm ).

Stafford Fathom / Development Team :

1) Tom Stanley ( G/K ) ( went direct to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone with Neil Jinks ),

2) Tom Deakin ( his mum drove him to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ),

3) Paul Rennie ( drove certain team members to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ),

4) Neil Jinks ( drove direct to Alleynes Sports Centre with goalkeeper, Tom Stanley – but left 15 minutes before the end of the game Re : him playing for Stafford 5ths at Stone Hockey Club at 3.30pm ),

5) John Sinclair,

6) Glynn Bibby ( drove to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone with partner Jo Lovatt of Stafford Ladies Hockey ),

7) Jay Mullor ( drove direct to Alleynes Sports Centre with his son, Joe – but he left 15 minutes before the end Re : him playing in goals for Stafford 4ths at Beaconside at 4pm ),

8) Joe Mullor ( went direct to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone with his Dad, Jay and his mum collected him after the game ),

9) Taran Bassie,

10) Kyle Rennie,

11) George Hodgkinson ( his mum drove him direct to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ),

12) Will Buckley ( his dad drove him to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ),

13) Jo Lovatt of Stafford Ladies ( Glynn Bibby drove Jo to Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ).

When Stafford Fathoms arrived at Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone, it soon became very apparent to all in the Stafford Fathom Team, that the Barlaston Fathom Team they were playing against, was a team of experienced players, as there appeared to be no youngsters in their side and with Stafford fielding a number of youngsters in their side, three of which i.e. Tom Stanley in goals, Tom Deakin & Joe Mullor ( all of school age i.e. 11 to 16 ) were all making their debut in a Stafford Fathom White Shirt.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw the young looking Stafford Fathoms overwrought by this experienced Barlaston Fathom Team and they soon found themselves trailing by 5 goals to nil, as they allowed their opponents to dictate / dominate the game and debutant keeper in Stafford Fathoms goals, Tom Stanley who in this 15 minute period had made some good saves for Stafford, was unable to prevent any of these 5 goals hitting the back of his Stafford net. However, after this 15 minute period the Stafford Fathom Team settled down and started to keep their opponents at bay and at half time Barlaston Fathoms had only been able to get another goal pass a now resolute Stafford Fathom Team and were now winning the game 6-0.
Second Half saw Barlaston Fathoms kindly allow Stafford Fathoms to field both their 2 substitutes so when the second half began Stafford Fathom Team had 13 players on the pitch ( including Jo Lovatt from Stafford Ladies ) against the Barlaston Fathom Team of 11 players and no substitutes and even though Stafford had the superiority of numbers on the field it didn’t prevent their opponents scoring a few more goals in this half, but Stafford Fathoms were now making this experienced Barlaston Fathom Team work really hard for their rewards ( i.e. additional goals ) and 15 minutes before the game finished 2 players i.e. experienced Jay Mullor & Neil Jinks had to leave to play for other Stafford Teams elsewhere ( Neil Jinks was playing for Stafford 5ths at Stone Hockey Club Re : 3.30pm pushback & Jay Mullor was playing in goals for Stafford 4ths at Beaconside, Stafford Re : 4pm pushback ) and the Umpire, Dave Thurgarland from Stafford also had to leave to go and captain the Stafford 4th. Team who were playing at Beaconside, Stafford at 4pm. However, in the final 10 minutes of the game Stafford youngsters of George Hodgkinson & Will Buckley with the assistance of Glynn Bibby combined well up front to set up George Hodgkinson with a one on one chance against the Barlaston Fathom Keeper, who did well to block / prevent George Hodgkinson getting a solitary goal for Stafford Fathoms.

All players who played in yesterdays Stafford’s Fathom Team should be pleased with their performance in this very tough game against a very experienced Barlaston Fathom Team, especially as after this game at the Pheasant Pub in Stone whilst having teas and something to drink, it became apparent while talking to a member of the Barlaston Fathom Team that the team they had just lost 13-0 to, was their 2nd. Team and that 2 seasons ago their 2nd. Team was part of the fathom fixtures but last season they had reverted back to playing second team league fixtures but were getting well beaten in a lot of their fixtures and in one game they were beaten 16-0, so this season they entered their 2nd Team back into the fathom fixtures.

Both myself as Captain of the Stafford Fathom Team and Paul Rennie as Vice Captain of the Stafford Fathom Team were really pleased how all players in the side kept going and didn’t let their heads drop at any time, especially as it was the first fathom game of the season for some of them and some opposition players & officials also made similar comments about our Stafford Fathom side and the Man of the Match award was awarded by Stafford Fathom Team Captain, John Sinclair & Vice Captain, Paul Rennie to all the youngsters in the side Re : Tom Stanley in goals, Tom Deakin, Will Buckley, George Hodgkinson & Joe Mullor for their dedication to keep going even though the Stafford Fathom Team were beaten 13-0 by this experienced Barlaston Fathoms / 2nd. Team.

Stafford Fathom’s next game this Saturday is a Home game to North Staffs Fathoms at Beaconside, Stafford ( Re : 10am pushback and 9.30am meet at Beaconside, for players selected to play in this game ) and as Captain of the Stafford Fathom Team I am hoping the togetherness and experience gained by all players in yesterday’s game will be utilised by them for this home game this Saturday against North Staffs Fathoms.

The winner + anyone else who finds this spelling mistake will also receive a Sinky Bonus Point and at the end of the season the person with the most Sinky Bonus Points will receive a box of chocolates from me. Sinky Bonus Points will be awarded every time I send out an e mail or report on hockey matters this season, where I have deliberately put a spelling mistake in and the e mail or report will clearly state that there is a spelling mistake to find.

Yesterday saw Stafford Fathoms kick off their hockey season with a friendly fixture Away to Bridgnorth Fathoms with a 2.30pm pushback on Bridgnorth’s excellent grass pitch outside their clubhouse.
The Stafford Fathom Team had to unfortunately lend a player from Bridgnorth as Stafford were only able to field 10 players for this game and they also had to call on the services of Logic, a goalie who used to play regularly for the club a few seasons ago and lives in the Bridgnorth area to go in between the posts for them. Stafford Fathoms were also giving hockey debuts to a young Ollie Simmonds and newcomer : Glynn Bibby and with Lee the loanee player from Bridgnorth making Stafford Fathom Team up to 11 they and the rest of the team, soon found as the whistle went for the start of the game that they were playing against a strong and well organised Bridgnorth side, which contained a number of very experienced players along with some good youngsters and it wasn’t long before they found a way through Stafford’s resolute defence to go one up. Stafford combined well at times after this set-back, but were finding it difficult to break through Bridgnorth’s midfield / defence and it wasn’t long before Bridgnorth were able to grind Stafford down and add to their goal tally and go 2-0 up. However, it wasn’t all one way traffic for Bridgnorth and just before half time Paul Rennie had a terrific shot from a short corner deflected round the post by a Bridgnorth player standing on their goal line. Unfortunately, at half-time Stafford Fathoms found themselves trailing by 2 goals to nil. The second half saw Stafford Fathom’s Vice Captain, Paul Rennie make a few tactical changes to the side and with this and a lot more determination, hard work and endeavor by the whole of the Stafford Fathom Team, they soon found that they were alot more competitive in all areas of the field, especially in midfield where a young Harry Coltman was challenging for everything that was going and as a result of all these factors, they were having alot more possession of the ball, which eventually resulted in the forward line of debutant Glynn Bibby, Tyler Murray and the Captain, John Sinclair setting up young Harry Coltman to score for Stafford Fathoms, his first goal of the season ( hopefully there will be more to follow from him during the rest of the season ). Even though Stafford after getting this goal back, went close on a number of occasions to equalising, Stafford’s defence of Rev. Peter Powers, debutant Ollie Simmonds, Neil Jinks, Paul & Kyle Rennie all had to be switched on and on their guard, in order to deal with Bridgnorth’s counter attacks and on one occasion Bridgnorth did manage to get the better of Stafford’s defence and Logic in Stafford’s goal had to pull out a good save as he pushed a shot on his goal, round the post from them. When the final whistle, blew Stafford Fathom Team found that their tyre less work and endeavor hadn’t quite been enough to find that all important equaliser, as Bridgnorth finished running out the victors, winning the game 2-1.
All players who played in yesterdays Stafford’s Fathom Team should be pleased with their overall performance in this game against Bridgnorth, especially as it was the first Fathom Game of the season and on another positive point Stafford Fathoms did technically win the second half 1-0, through Harry Coltman’s goal, who incidentally was voted Man of the Match by the whole of the Stafford Fathom Team after this game for all his hard work & competiveness in midfield.

Stafford Fathom’s continue their season next Saturday with an Away game to Barlaston Fathoms at Alleynes Sports Centre, Stone ( Re : 2pm pushback ).

Hockey Match Fees for this new hockey season are £10 for Senior / Working Players & £5 for Juniors & Students / Unemployed and payment of match fees in the fathom team should be paid before the start of all Fathom Games ( home or away ) to myself as Captain of the side.

I think Annual Subs are the same as last year, so it would be very much appreciated if you could arrange to get this out of the way, by paying it as soon as you can and it can either be handed to me as Captain of the Fathoms or to a club official along with a completed membership form ( which is attached to this e mail ) and if you are paying your annual subs by cheque ( which I would recommend you do ) then it needs to be made payable to Stafford Hockey Club.

In order to try and improve on last season’s excellent achievements in the fathom’s it would assist me and Paul Rennie, as Stafford Fathom Vice Captain to know asap your availability or not to play in any of the Stafford Fathom Fixtures for 2014 / 2015 ( Home or Away and a text to my mobile number listed below in advance of these fathom games with your name and the dates you are available to play and the dates your not available to play and your assistance / cooperation in this matter, would be very much appreciated ) and if you are available to play in any of Stafford Fathom games this season, home or away, that you arrive on time for the meet time for them, especially for the journey’s to the away games and if you are struggling to make the dedicated meet time for each fathom game ( home or away ) that you text or call me asap on my mobile ( which is listed below ), as it helps me and Paul in the preparation & organisation of getting the Fathom Team together before start of the game at home and about the travelling arrangements to the away games.
